The World Society for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery, established in 2006, has rapidly become the largest
organization in the world of pediatric and congenital heart surgeons coming from over 70 countries. The Vision of the World Society is that every child born anywhere in the world with a congenital heart defect should have access to appropriate medical and surgical care. Its Mission is to promot e the highest quality comprehensive care to all patients with pediatric and/or congenital heart disease, from the fetu s to the adult, regardless of the patient’ s economic means, with emphasis on excellence in education, research and communityservice.
The World Society has focused its initial efforts on bringing together the world ‘s pediatr ic and congenital heart surgeons and on creating increased awareness of the plight of the millions of children born with congenital heart disease in need of adequate care. Most importantly in the last 5 years the efforts of the World Society have been primarily focused on education and dissemination of knowledge to surgeons from all parts of the world.
It has held and provided support for highly successful educational meetings in Washington, D.C., USA in 2007, in Montreal, Canada in 2008, in Cairns, Australia in 2009, in Antigua, Guatemala in July 20 10, in Shanghai, China in October 2010 and in Johannesburg, South Africa in March 201 l. Also in June 20 11, the World Society held its Third Scientific Meeting in Istanbul, Turkey which was an unparalleled success. In March 2012, the World Society will hold a Joint Scientific Meeting with the Sociedad Latina de Cardiologia y Cirurgia Cardiovascu lar Pediatrica in Lima, Peru. These meetings held on all continents have been attended by hundreds of pediatric heart surgeons, especially from the areas of great need.
An extremely valuable achievement has also been the establishment of the World Journal for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery, the official journ al of the World Society, which began its publication in April 2010. The World Journal is the only scientific journal completely dedicated to the field of pediatric and congenital heart surgeryand is a great educational tool with a global reach in today’s interconnected and digital world.
All these efforts have been invaluable towards the education of hundreds of pediatric heart surgeons and their colleagues from all over the world. Furthermore, the World Society has been busy building alliances with many continental and regional organizations, with the main focus on improving education to the health care givers and ultimately improving care for the children in need.
The World Society would like to express profound gratitude for the invaluable support received from the Andy Collins for Kids Fund and its partners and from the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation. This ongoing support is essential to the ability of World Society in continuing its leadership role in building a global coalition to improve care and education for children and adults with congenital heart disease across the world.
With profound gratitude,
